Look, I know this fandom doesn’t wanna hear it cause some are allergic to nuance, but Otto is right. He is abso-fucking-lutely right. While there is a true born son in the picture Rhaenyra’s reign will never be secure. Period.
Yes, she’s the rightful heir because Viserys made her the heir, but Aegon has a legal claim too thanks to law and precedent. And people underestimate how powerful that is. That scene with the Lannister in the tent during the hunt isn’t just to show you he’s an asshole. He is meant to represent the lords of Westeros in this scene. He is the clue to the political sentiment in the country. The lords expect Aegon to be named heir. This is why they pushed Viserys to get remarried. Even if Aegon didn’t want it, just by the virtue of being alive he’s a threat. And if Rhaenyra wants her throne absolutely secured, then knives are gonna come out. (I can give you several real life examples in history on this.)
Otto is not an idiot. He’s a very good politician and he can see the writing on the wall. If the Blackfyre’s were a huge problem, and they’re bastards, if Cat feared Jon Snow and he’s suppose to be a bastard, imagine a true born son. I don’t blame Alicent for not wanting to be at Rhaenyra’s mercy when that day comes, especially when her dearest friend, who she defended several times, just lied to her after just swearing on her mothers grave. And even more so when she marries Daemon. Daemon who just murdered his own wife, will have no problem killing Aegon and his siblings when it comes down to it and if it means a completely secure throne for Rhaenyra and him.
